A recent CIPD report on absence provided data to show that on average employee absence is at a rate of 8 days per year per employee, with an average base cost of £666 per employee, per year. This base cost does not include the cost of management time to address the issue or any of the other indirect costs.
With the introduction of ‘Fit Notes’ instead of ‘Sick Notes’, there is a clear requirement for Employers to adopt a flexible and reasonable approach to accommodate employees who have short term or long term illnesses. There is also a clear requirement on the employee to seek to be in work rather than be absent.
